LIBERTY: The Amazing Story of America's Favorite Statue

From Chapter 6, "Liberty Enlightening the World:"

The Statue of Liberty was dedicated on October 28, 1886. Despite
cold winds and rain, 20,000 men marched in the morning parade
from 57th Street to the Battery. A million spectators lined the
five-mile route, and hundreds of ships and boats clogged New York
Harbor. Liberty's face was covered by a large sheet of canvas,
painted to resemble a French flag.
The ceremonies on Bedloe's Island began with a prayer by
historian and theologian Richard Storrs, pastor of Brooklyn's
Church of the Pilgrims. He was followed by Ferdinand de Lesseps,
president of the French-American Union, and William Evarts,
chairman of the American Committee.
Mistaking a pause in Evarts' speech for the long-awaited signal to
"unveil" the statue, Bartholdi cut the ropes holding the giant flag a
few minutes early. Cheers, steam whistles, and naval salutes filled
the harbor for the next fifteen minutes.
